We were a bit tired and ready for a quick break. Getting to our first stop, Skalnaté tarn wasn’t a long way, but the elevation and strong summer sun did its job very well.
As soon as we reached the lake, gray clouds took over the whole ambience. Their strong presence communicated simply: The weather is what rules here in the mountains.
After having a quick bite and checking the forecast we decide to move forward. No wasted minutes. Time is another constraint we need to keep in mind.
A clear rocky path traversing along the mountain slope becomes our anchor for the next hour. It leads us through the thick clouds. We can only imagine the views we would have had on a clear day.
Now reaching Veľká Svišťovka peak. If it wasn’t for the sign, you wouldn’t be able to tell. Mist is slowly flowing around us, suggesting the direction of the wind. You can smell the humidity.
The further we go, the more the colors fade. Everything seems completely washed out. Only a couple of purple and yellow mountain flowers stick out here and there. They draw all our attention.
Suddenly we realize we are not alone. A chamois emerges slowly from a nearby dwarf pine. It gives us a glance, but minds its own business. Just a few more steps forward and we see its partner. Right in front of us on the trail. It is a bit more curious initially, but walks its way in the end.
A chamois in the mist
The clouds finally seem to clear a bit. We descend several meters and the area in front of us starts to open. Colors are getting brighter, but still not quite there.
You hear a lively stream. In a second you realize there is a small waterfall on the side. The way down is not gentle anymore. It is steep. At the time when you start to question how we will get further, you spot a set of massive chains. These will help us, if we hold tight. Even a helmet could be put into use here.
Regardless, the section is short and we are safely right on a gentle rocky trail again.
Clouds are moving away even more and you get a glimpse of another mountain in the distance. It’s been there all the time, just hidden behind the clouds.
You know you are almost at your destination. Just a few more steps down. Suddenly, Zelené tarn appears, showing off its beautiful green water.
It is inviting. Pulling you closer.
The reflections on the water mirror the mountain above and create a colorful painting, just for us. The place is calm and quiet. Sounds we make while walking are dampened by the environment. It feels intimate.
Zelené tarn
We take a few steps and discover a small chalet with a handful of other hikers. Everyone respecting nature.
We could spend a night or two here once.
You pause for one last moment. Breathing in the magical atmosphere of the tarn Zelené.
It is time to move before it gets dark. Thick pine forest is awaiting in front of us.
I wrote this text on June 25, 2026, but I manually set the publication date to July 2021 when we did the hike.
