Ceramics in Dharavi

Published:

It is some time before noon. The sun is beating down on us, hard. We have already walked through several alleys with plastic recycling, leather processing, machine manufacturing, and fabric dyeing. We have seen diligent tailors and sprawled-out cats.

The houses here are simple, but multi-storey. Sheet metal roofs.

Tangled electrical cables stretch in every direction. Better not touch them. You need to watch your step. Otherwise, you feel safe here.

Suddenly we cross a bridge of fast-moving cars and noise. The river is full of rubbish and waiting to be cleaned - before the rainy season starts and the water level rises significantly.

Right after the bridge we dive back into the alleys. This part is even quieter than the one before. We walk along an alley full of fresh ceramics. Various vessels, little bowls. Some finished, others still being made.

This group of little vases is already hiding in the shade.

And the rest?

The sun is beating down on them, hard.
