Efficiency as a hobby

Published:

I was falling asleep one evening, thinking about life. I realised that one of my “fetishes” is doing things efficiently. Ideally optimise everything — make sure it all runs as it should, only the necessary energy is consumed, money is spent only in ways that bring maximum value, be on time everywhere…

Going for a bike ride? Then the route should be the safest and most pleasant, with the fewest cars, and it can be long — you need the exercise anyway..

On one hand, this kind of “optimisation” thinking brings plenty of positives (travelling with minimal luggage, keeping personal expenses low, preventing injuries, punctuality, …). On the other hand, not every aspect of life is worth optimising to the max.

If you have a similar obsession, you know it’s good to rein in the urge to do everything efficiently.

But it’s hard to always resist. That feeling when you pack only the things you actually need for a trip… That feeling when your wallet carries only the cards and cash you’ll really use… That feeling of knowing where every euro went this month and every expense made sense…

Optimisation and efficiency aren’t always about “the most, the best, the least”. We’re not always looking for maxima or minima, but “the right” level for the given situation.

…which reminds me that right now is the right time to go for a walk — the sun is out, it stopped raining, and it’s fairly warm. See you next time! :)
